She then enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and studied there for three years. She has won many awards and accolades for her work in theater, film, and television. She attended the prestigious Vassar College where she studied English literature and drama. After graduating, she went on to study at the Actors Studio where she studied with Lee Strasberg.
This was the beginning of a long career on Broadway which would see her perform in over 30 productions. Marian Seldes was an actress and a theater director.
Tall and elegant and dark-haired, Seldes was a formidable presence on stage and a drama queen through and through. She made her Broadway debut in 1947 and has been drawing raves ever since. Unforgettable in Albee s enigmatic Three Tall Women, she was the sort of actress who stole every scene just by entering it.
Seldes has long been associated with Albee, appearing in three of his plays, starting with "Tiny Alice" in 1962. Her first marriage to Julian Claman , by whom she had a daughter, ended in divorce in 1961. She was married to screenwriter Garson Kanin from 1990 until his death in 1999.
In a career spanning six decades, Seldes performed in film, television and radio but was most celebrated for her theatre work, making her Broadway debut in 1948 in the Robinson Jeffers adaptation of "Medea," directed by John Gielgud and starring Judith Anderson in the title role. Seldes earned five Tony nominations, winning the award her first time out in 1967 for her supporting role in "A Delicate Balance" by the playwright Edward Albee, with whom she had a long association.
