Translating his reputation into a money making venture as a bouncer, McClean effectively ran security at many of the East End pubs. Naturally, he quickly became friends with the East End underworld element, acting as an enforcer in several circles. That work always comes with a price, and McClean found himself on the wrong end of a shotgun one evening while manning the door of a pub. While shot in the leg, he chased down the motorcycle-riding assailants nearly catching them. He then hailed a cab to the hospital where he walked himself into the emergency room. Unlicensed boxing matches became a favorite pastime in 1970s London, and by the time he finished his tour, McClean had somewhere north of 2,000 fights some say 4,000 under his belt, both in and out of the ring. Let that sink in for a minute. Not your modern rules, padded gloves and ring-girls type fights.
Street fights. The kind that leave you scarred internally and externally. McClean was a champion and now he was making money doing what he loved: hitting other people. Upon his release, he became an underworld enforcer and unlicensed boxing powerhouse. His reputation for being a psychopath apparently had no ill effect on his career. In fact, most likely enhanced it. That made Shaw a perfect target in the eyes of the fearless McLean, and it was only a matter of time before the 28-year-old would battle Shaw. Losing his first fight to Shaw due to an obvious lack of conditioning, McLean quickly arranged a rematch.
On that night, McLean systematically destroyed his opponent, punching him so hard in the second round he knocked him out of the ring, disqualifying Shaw.
I recall an article on Lenny McLean in Fighting Arts International where the writer suggested that had Lenny been born in Okinawa he would have been regarded as a karate master. I can see that. There are some, who perhaps have an unrealistic and idealised view of violence, and a similarly idealistic view of the old masters, who would dispute that. However, I would say we need to look at things from the perspective of ability and practicality. Watch the clip and see how explosive and pragmatic everything is.
Also notice that he makes reference to his poetry and in the following clips there is a clear moral code that he operates to and he ultimately feels violence is futile and detestable. McLean immediately protested his innocence, and claimed the police had a vendetta against him because of his association with the Krays. Reportedly, the police had forcefully restrained him with a stranglehold.
Acting career McLean was featured prominently in a television documentary on nightclub security staff, titled Bounce: Behind The Velvet Rope. He gravitated towards acting after being introduced to an agent by two long-term show-business friends, Mike Reid and Freddie Starr , for whom with Archie Mills he had "minded," and also after "minding" the cast of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. He was subsequently diagnosed with pleurisy , although further X-ray examination proved he was suffering from lung cancer which had metastasized to his brain.
McLean beat Shaw in a rematch with a dramatic first-round knockout , in which Shaw was physically knocked out of the ring. McLean, who in his prime was 6feet tall and weighed over 20st, boasted that he could beat anybody, in either a legitimate match or in an unlicensed match with or without gloves.
He reputedly sent out challenges to many of the famous boxers of the day, including Muhammad Ali and Mr. T , though neither contest materialised. McLean lost some face as he was challenged by the "King of the Gypsies" Bartley Gorman , but did not accept the fight. He was offered a fight with professional boxer David "Bomber" Pearce , the hard-hitting British heavyweight champion from Newport. McLean declined to fight Pearce, he later commented that was the only time in his career he had doubts.
He was known to have lost several fights, although he always maintained that he had never lost a fight "on the cobbles " or outside the ring. In unlicensed matches, he was twice stopped by Cliff Field. In his autobiography, McLean claimed to have competed in almost 4,000 fights over three decades, and said he won the large majority of these.
