Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, who forged closer ties with US, dead at 84
Mulroney, aged 84, breathed his last in Palm Beach, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of political prominence and contributions to Canada. This decision reflects the recognition of his enduring impact on the nation. As the nation prepares for the state funeral, attention turns to the ceremony that will bring together dignitaries, political figures, and the public. The funeral will serve as a fitting tribute to a leader whose influence extended beyond borders and whose legacy will endure in the annals of Canadian history.
When the electoral dust settled, the Liberals formed the next government, and the smouldering crater once known as the Progressive Conservative Party was left with two seats. It was the worst defeat in Canadian politics. In 1995, it was revealed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was investigating whether Mulroney accepted kickbacks on the sale of Airbus jets to Air Canada. And the scandals continue. Yet there is no debating it: Brian Mulroney is back. Hampson achieves that goal effortlessly, detailing how Mulroney backed Commonwealth sanctions in 1986 against South Africa to help bring an end to apartheid, persuaded President George H. Bush to seek United Nations backing for the 1990 Gulf War, and was a constant campaigner for human rights.
Like Rocky Balboa in the movie Creed, Mulroney has been called out of retirement to remind us of his old winning ways. His father toiled as an electrician at the local mill in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and the family scraped by on his hourly wage. Mulroney grew up an anglophone Catholic in a francophone town where most English speakers were Protestant—linguistic and religious barriers cast him as an outsider. Yet, from an early age, Mulroney could ingratiate himself with insiders and place himself at the centre of attention. Mulroney would go on to a successful career, during the 1970s, as a labour lawyer and, later, a business executive. Hubs, according to Mulroney biographer John Sawatsky, were a select group of influencers in a city or area. They would get calls from Mulroney as often as every week. Spokes—a larger group, generally under the sway of hubs—might receive only one or two calls a year.
A few short months after his graduation, still just 16 years of age, he stepped foot on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University as a freshman, commencing a relationship which would be consistently strengthened over the decades to come. As a student of political science at StFX, a young Mr. Mulroney soon became involved with the debate team and the student Progressive Conservative society, both of which helped him find his voice, and set him on a path that would eventually lead to 24 Sussex Drive. Much has already been written and said, with more to come in the days and weeks ahead, about the incredible political career that followed, but for the Xaverian community, we have a more personal legacy on which to reflect. Before he was elected leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party in 1983, Mr. Mulroney served as president of the Iron Ore Company of Canada for several years. During that time, his alma mater bestowed upon him an honorary doctor of laws in 1978. It is a monument to the sacrifice of others — some uneducated, some unsung, all selfless — who many years ago wanted to ensure that people like you and me would have what they were so frequently denied — opportunity.
Stripped of its intellectual pretensions, of the cloak of human rights, these ritual denunciations of Israel with which we have become all too familiar are a pernicious form of racism. Mulroney says King, a successful Liberal leader, shared common beliefs with leaders of the Nazi regime. Article content Mulroney says in his speech notes that positive experiences with the Jewish community while growing up in Quebec followed by hearing antisemitic characterizations in public life led him to make a promise.
Брайан Малруни – все о персоне
Far from being attacked by the federal Liberals, they now, under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, seek his advice on key issues — including the time he briefed the federal cabinet during the highly sensitive NAFTA renegotiation with the Trump administration. With two near-death medical scares behind him, he has cut back on the lucrative speeches and global travel that were a regular part of life before the COVID pandemic. He mostly works from his study at home and only recently has resumed going in to his Montreal office at the law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright, where he has been a senior adviser since 1993. He still chairs or sits on the board of a number of international companies and foundations in Canada, the United States and abroad.
And he remains an inveterate user of the telephone, making and taking calls from around the world at almost all hours of the day. Bush throw out the first pitch on Opening Day in Toronto in 1990. Bush at their state funerals.
As far as Mulroney has come from his early days in Baie Comeau, they still shape him in profound ways. He is widely — accurately — often described as the ultimate insider, with friends at the highest reaches of business and politics around the world. But like his late friend Desmarais, Mulroney is self-made.
Mulroney was obliged early in life to figure out ways to fit in and get ahead. He was a blue-collar anglophone kid in a majority francophone town where most of the small anglo cadre were the bosses; then a boarding student in St. In addition to acquiring flawless colloquial French, those experiences toughened him.
He learned how to read a room, analyze the environment, and make the best of whatever situation he was in. Those qualities were invaluable as a labour lawyer, and even more so in politics. He became expert in tactical planning, anticipating events and negotiating agreements both domestically and on the world stage.
Advertisement Mulroney was first elected in 1984 after winning the largest majority in Parliament in Canadian history, but he left almost a decade later with the lowest approval rating in Canadian history. His Progressive Conservative party suffered a devastating defeat just after he left office. But in the years after the loss, prime ministers sought his advice.

He is also the subject of many jokes, parodies, and satires, such as the CBC comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which features a puppet of Mulroney as a recurring character. We adored him. I miss you, Daddy," she concluded. His three sons, Ben, Mark and Nicolas, also offered prayers during the funeral. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau eulogized Mulroney as a leader that was motivated by "getting the big things right.
