Первопроходец в этой области — Наталья Самутина — среди мотивов такого чтения называла : узнавание себя в тексте — самопознание через анализ действий и целей персонажа; зачарованность — полное погружение в воображаемый мир возможен эскапизм ; создание конфигураций социального знания — размышления о том, что беспокоит читателей в повседневности, передача социального опыта; шок — «острота» чтения; напряжение соотнесения с каноном исходным произведением, «субстратом» фанфика — читатель не знает, будет ли текст повторять или менять канон, что добавляет азарта к прочтению; чтение, приносящее сексуальное удовольствие. Исследователь Лэреми Тейлор выделил мотивы эвдемонистические они включают поиск значимого опыта, ответов на фундаментальные вопросы и гедонистические ожидание позитивных эмоций от контента; в других классификациях это расслабление, веселье. Некоторые исследователи обнаруживают и такие мотивы чтения фанфиков, как знакомство с новыми людьми, разделяющими интерес к фанфикшн социальный мотив , повышение креативности развитие воображения , а также мотивы, связанные с фандомом возвращение к любимому вымышленному миру, изучение других точек зрения на произведение.
В итоге матрица мотивов, подготовленная для опроса читательниц, в исследовании выглядит так: 1. Мотивы, связанные с участием в фандоме: желание вновь погрузиться в любимый вымышленный мир; восполнение пробелов в оригинальном произведении авторами фанфикшн; напряжение соотнесения с каноном; 2. Хобби и хорошее развлечение; 3.
Эмоциональные мотивы: узнавание себя в персонажах и получение знаний о себе; сексуальное удовольствие; шок; 4. Развитие воображения и улучшение навыков написания фанфикшн. К читательским практикам исследовательницы отнесли частоту чтения фанфикшн в месяц, объём произведения, его направленность, рейтинг особая маркировка , связь фанфика с фандомом и вовлечённость в фанфикшн-сообщество.
