CHICAGO — It seemed it would be quiet night for the Washington Capitals during the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft at United Center. Off the ice, they had a disgruntled star in Matt Duchene who wanted to be traded. Finally, despite having the best odds to win the Draft Lottery, they ended up falling all the way to fourth. However, while this looked like a stroke of bad luck that would set the franchise back years, it ended up becoming a centerpiece of their rapid rebuild to glory. This, of course, was due in no small part to their selection of Cale Makar. Needless to say, Cale Makar is a true superstar that will be a face of the NHL for years if not decades. However, he quickly went about proving any skeptics wrong by tearing up the NCAA and winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college. Next, he joined the team for the 2019 postseason, where he played 10 games and posted six points.
Following this strong start, he went on to win the 2020 Calder Trophy as the top rookie of the year and then went on to dominate the league in 2021-22 en route to winning the Norris Trophy. Finally, he capped everything off by claiming the 2022 Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Award. Needless to say, this pick will be a defining moment for the Avalanche over the next decade-plus. The Canucks seemingly reached and selected forward Elias Pettersson, who divided the experts.
Some havd him ranked in the top ten while others saw him as a late-first rounder at best. Once Pettersson took the ice for the Canucks, he left any of his doubters behind. He set the standard throughout his rookie season in 2018-19, posting 28 goals and 66 points en route to winning the Calder Trophy despite only playing in 71 games.
Erik Brannstrom, the third Golden Knights pick of the evening, goes at No. Cal Foote — a big, offensive-minded, right-shot defenceman — is taken 14th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning. You may know his dad, Adam. Foote put up 57 points in 71 games with Kelowna this past season. Tampa coming up at 14, Calgary at 16 and Toronto at 17. Three teams with interest in Hamonic.

Compared to the NHL Expansion Draft 2000 , the number of protectable players is many times lower because the league wants to ensure the competitiveness of the new team. In the last expansion draft, the teams could either exclude nine forwards, five defenders and one goalkeeper or seven forwards, three defenders and two goalkeepers from the selection process. The biggest gains in the rankins belong to Nick Suzuki and Erik Brannstrom, both jumping up nine spots with Kailer Yamamoto up four. The biggest fallers are Klim Kostin and Isaac Ratcliffe who dropped nine spots each, while Eric Rasmussen dropped six. He is a dynamic offensive player, but an underrated defensive player as well. The 2016 NHL Draft has come and gone, and most teams have already held their post-draft development camp, getting an up close and personal look at the players they have selected in their new jerseys. However, scouting new talent never stops and with this in mind we turn our attention towards the talent that will be available in the 2017 NHL Draft. It may be early and there is still a full year of hockey to be played, likely leading to a lot of movement between these rankings and where players end up at the end of next season, but still lets take a look and preview the 2017 NHL Draft. It may not have the hype that accompanies Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine , but there will be plenty of talent available. A natural sniper, he has a tremendous wrist shot and quick release, as well as the quick, soft hands to bury chances in close to the net. His game is incredibly mature for his age, he has high end hockey IQ and always seems to make the right play both with and without the puck.
Patrick has excellent vision and passing skills. He can play both the power and the finesse game. Patrick works well down low, using his big body to shield the puck and to make plays in the cycle game. He also plays a strong two-way game, and is even used to kill penalties. Patrick had 41 goals and 102 points in 71 games for the Wheat Kings last season. He moves well both forwards and backwards, with excellent speed and acceleration.
He also has very good edgework and pivots. As such he can cover a ton of ice. He can make offensive plays rushing the puck, or pinching in at the blueline; but still has the speed to get back defensively. Liljegren has the poise and smarts to quarterback a power play. He has excellent vision, and makes good passes to set things up at the line. He can also make the long breakout pass to hit a teammate streaking through the neutral zone.
He uses it to get in on the fore check and cause problems for defenders. He uses his size to shield the puck and maintain possession in the cycle game, and uses his powerful stride to fight through checks and drive the net. Vilardi has a very long reach and excellent puck handling ability. He uses these assets to extend plays and wait for teammates to get open, before hitting them with a pass. Vilardi is constantly moving and getting involved in the play. He is extremely gritty and involved in battles along the boards, and in front of the net.
The power forward prospect also has a very good wrist shot. With Windsor hosting the 2017 Memorial Cup , there will be plenty of opportunities to show off his skills to the scouts. He put up 17 goals and 38 points in 62 games last year.

Last June after the NHL Draft finished up in Buffalo, we drove 15 minutes away to a local rink to begin scouting for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Original Pick: Cal Foote The Lightning desired a defenseman to slide into their top-four with the 14th overall selection. Batherson was worthy of a first-round draft-pick, and Boston would be as good a team as any to make the pick. Original Pick: Robert Thomas With Thomas being selected 13 picks earlier in our re-draft, the Blues find themselves in a difficult spot in attempting to find any kind of an equivalent. Their closest target might have been the Finnish forward from the Swift Current Broncos in Heponiemi.
At the time, however, the team was in the market for improving their team from the back, out. Like some others, Fleury could climb this list even more, but to be safe, 21 is a good spot.
It may seem as though sublime defender Cale Makar from the Brooks Bandits is simply a flavor-of-the-month kind of prospect because of the way he crushed a lesser-known league like the Alberta Junior Hockey League. It took a while, but I finally realized that questioning the level his competition, or his choosing to attend UMass-Amherst over bigger, tougher NCAA programs, is nitpicking at its finest. But times are changing, and the Big Leagues are desperately promoting speed and skill, two things Makar has in spades. Klim Kostin was a favorite player of mine in the preseason, but his draft year was as incomplete as they come.
He followed up a dominant Ivan Hlinka tournament with a promotion to the KHL — a rarity for pre-draft teenagers. Stuck in a depth role that saw him play under 10 minutes a game, Kostin was demoted to a lower league before shutting his season down with a shoulder injury. The rankings I began compiling as far back as August are not intended to be a blueprint for how the draft unfolds when it begins in Chicago on June 23rd. February 17, 2021 Redrafting the 2017 NHL Draft Following up two of the best drafts in recent history, the 2017 NHL Draft was expected to be below-average both in terms of the top talent available and depth. The top-two prospects in the draft, Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier , were projected to be second-line centers at best. Three and a half years on, it still might not be a deep class, but three players selected after Patrick and Hischier have emerged as potential franchise talents. This season will prove as a breakout year for many and a chance for some to solidify their spot on a roster. After the draft, the consensus was that the Canucks stretched a bit to pick the Swede at fifth overall — the talent was there, but he needed to put weight on in order to play at the next level. He has since comfortably been the best player from the class so far. In the offensive zone, he is one of the most dangerous players in the league, with an incredibly powerful and accurate release — all the more impressive considering how lanky is. He produces highlight-reel plays night in, night out, with tremendous hands in tight. In his own zone, he is efficient at breaking up play with an active stick. Projected as a second-line centre, Pettersson could end up being one of the best middle-men in the league very soon. His incredible mobility combined with some of the best hands and shot in the league makes him a threat from anywhere on the ice. Whereas Makar usually creates offence rushing full-speed at defenders, Heiskanen is much more subtle. He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target. He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates.

In the season leading up to the draft Heiskanen excelled playing against grown men for Helsinki as he recorded 11 goals and 23 points in just 30 games in his second season for the club. These numbers were good enough for 24th among all defenseman but Miro had done it having played 30 less games than most of the players on this list who all happened to be 21 years of age and older. He would go on to play in all 82 games while consistently playing well north of 20 minutes per games as a 19 year old. Miro would go on to finish fourth in Calder voting that season behind eventual Calder Memorial winner Elias Petterson, 2019 Stanley Cup winner Jordon Binnington, and 2018 first overall pick Rasmus Dahlin. In 150 career NHL games, Heiskanen as amassed 20 goals and 68 points in 150 regular season games played and will be a stalwart on the Dallas blue line for many years to come. Out of the top five players selected in this draft, Makar was the only one who played NCAA where he tallied 21 goals and 70 points in 75 games played for the University of Massachusetts.

In Franchise Mode, you need to harvest the greatest amount of value possible from your picks to ensure the longevity of your club. In this case, the left wing went third overall, but his rapid development to 91 overall in just three seasons makes him one of the best prospects in Franchise Mode. Boasting ratings of 98 slap shot and wrist shot accuracy, as well as 97 slap shot and wrist shot power, at just 21-years-old, Flinn is already one of the best goalscorers in NHL 22. Hischier also has a very high work ethic, he never seems to stop working during a shift.
The answer is Callan Foote. Foote scored eight goals and 36 points in 71 games as a WHL rookie, showing real offensive prowess. Foote is an excellent skater. He skates well in both directions, and solid pivots and edgework allow him to cover a lot of ice.
Its more about battling in the corners and clearing the front of the net than throwing big open-ice hits though. Foote has a hard slap shot which he keeps low and puts on net. He also has good poise with the puck on his stick, and the vision to quarterback things from the point on the power play. He topped that in his second year, putting up 19 goals and 71 points in just 57 games.
The 71 points led the Chiefs in Scoring. He scored seven goals and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. A late birthday, he is not eligible until the 2017 draft, when he will have just completed his third year in the WHL. Yamamoto has tremendous hands, he is a great stickhandler and can bury goals in tight to the goalie.
He also is very quick to loose pucks with great acceleration and a really quick first step. More a play maker than a goal scorer, he uses his quickness and stickhandling to open up passing lanes. Yamamoto can feather passes tape-to-tape to his linemates and has outstanding vision. He also put up 15 goals and 34 points in 37 games playing in the under 20 SuperElite league.
A versatile player, Vesalainen has experience playing both wings. He has excellent size, and uses it to protect the puck along the boards and extend plays in the cycle. Gifted with a large wing-span, Vesalainen takes advantage of it to play keep-away with defenders. A budding power forward, Vesalainen wins battles along the boards, and is not afraid to fight through checks to get to the front of the net.
Vesalainen also has an excellent shot. His skating is surprisingly quick, and his stride long and fluid. He plays a strong two-way game and covers a lot of ground for a big man. Hague scored 14 goals last season, showing off a powerful slap shot on the power play.
He is able to move laterally and walk the line to open up shooting lanes to get his shot through.
