Sobhraj is responsible for multiple murders of young foreigners across Asia in the 1970s. Suave and articulate, Sobhraj used to befriend unsuspecting Western backpackers and upon earning their trust, drugged and murdered them, fleeing with their cash, valuables and passports. He said Sobhraj was sent straight to the airport from the immigration department after the French embassy prepared his travel documents. Sobhraj was immediately detained following his afternoon release from jail. From the central jail, Sobhraj was driven straight to the Department of Immigration in the Capital under a heavy security cover, flanked by machine gun-toting armed security guards.

However, he was jailed in India before he could stand trial on those charges. He resurfaced in September 2003 in Kathmandu where he was arrested and convicted in 2004 of the 1975 murder of American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich.

But once he was done with the couple, they were murdered, found strangled and burnt in December 1975. CHARLES Sobhraj — otherwise known as the Bikini Killer — murdered Western tourists in Asia in the 1970s. GQ talks to Charles Sobhraj the serial killer who beguiled the delusional and needy and wrecked the lives of almost everyone he knew. Чарльза Собраджа называли «азиатским Чарльзом Мэнсоном», и не зря: по части инфернальной харизмы он, пожалуй, опережает знаменитого американского убийцу.

The Chilling True Story Behind The Serpent Killer Charles Sobhraj
The court ordered Sobhraj, who had heart surgery in 2017, should be released on health grounds after serving more than three-quarters of his sentence for murdering a US tourist and a Canadian in Nepal in the 1970s. Posing as a gem trader, he would befriend his victims, many of them Western backpackers on the 1970s hippie trail, before drugging, robbing and murdering them. Suave and sophisticated, he was implicated in his first murder, a young American woman whose body was found on a beach wearing a bikini, in 1975. He was arrested in India in 1976 and ultimately spent 21 years in jail there, with a brief break in 1986 when he drugged prison guards and escaped. He was recaptured in the Indian coastal state of Goa.
To avoid that outcome, he escaped from prison and then allowed himself to be caught and sentenced to a term that would bring him up to 20 years - the statute of limitations on his Thai arrest warrant. All of which meant that in 1997 he returned to Paris, where I went to interview him for the Observer. There is a great deal of mythology surrounding serial killers and, indeed, the term itself is not exactly a scientific designation. Criminologists tend to define serial killers as people who have murdered three or more times over an extended period. There is usually also a psychological - rather than purely material - aspect to the killings, and perhaps a ritualised element too. They typically have a background in crime and they tend to select their victims from a particular social group or demographic. I wanted to know what he thought about his past deeds. But regardless of how he was defined, I wanted to know what he thought about his past deeds. He was staying in a tiny room at the Lutetia, the Left Bank hotel that was requisitioned by the Nazi secret service during the war. The first thing he did when I knocked on the door was offer me an open bottle of Coke, which was also the way he had incapacitated many of his victims.
He was arrested in India in 1976 and ultimately spent 21 years in jail there, with a brief break in 1986 when he drugged prison guards and escaped. He was recaptured in the Indian coastal state of Goa. Released in 1997, Sobhraj lived in Paris, giving paid interviews to journalists, but went back to Nepal in 2003. He was then dramatically spotted in a casino playing baccarat by journalist Joseph Nathan, one of the founders of the Himalayan Times newspaper, and arrested. Behind bars, Sobhraj maintained he was innocent of both murders and claimed he had never been to Nepal before the trip that resulted in his arrest.
