Pygmalion: The 1938 Movie
Anthony Asquith, who shared billing with his associate director and star, Leslie Howard, had not had a good film for several years. But Pygmalion placed him firmly in the front rank of British directors for his brilliant handling of this delicately satirical material. And it enjoyed as much of a critical success as it was popular with audiences. Shaw and Gabriel Pascal were thus encouraged to plan further collaborations on the filming of Shaw plays. Wendy Hiller suddenly found herself an important film star, sought after by both Hollywood and British studios, although she remained faithful to the stage and most selective in her future movie roles. For many, the 1938 Pygmalion remains in a marvelous class by itself, its modest, black-and-white luster undimmed by comparisons to its glamorous, prize-winning twin sister, the 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady or its 1964 screen counterpart.
This he sets out to do with great determination. The film for the most part stays very close to the original play. Shaw himself adapted the script for the screen, adding some scenes and characters that since have sometimes been used in new productions of the play as well. The above-mentioned controversy, it should be pointed out, is not in the tension between a happy versus unhappy ending. The controversy is rather as to whether she should remain with Higgins or go out in the world and stand on her own two feet.
Higgins publicly humiliates and berates the girl for her uncouth Cockney accent and boasts that he could teach her to speak more genteel so well that he could pass her off as a proper lady. While Higgins continues to treat Eliza like a dirty commoner, Pickering treats her with kindness and gentleness. Higgins decides to make good on his boast and agrees to teach the girl. The performances from the actors were good enough, especially Hiller. However, I got the general feeling that the entire story was being rushed. Scenes and nuances that I felt could have been played slower for things like character development or plot believability were delivered quickly. At times the dialogue seemed to be rapid-fire or throw-away.
Her halting speech, exaggerated diction and bizarre tales impress the guests. The snobbish Higgins deems the venture a success, but an invitation to a ball at the Transylvanian embassy will be, he feels, the true test of how much his student has learned from his own brilliant instruction.
There are, now, even more concentrated, even severe, lessons—more on poise, curtsying, dancing and the proper address for an archbishop, a cardinal, the Queen and others of the upper crust who will scrutinize her. During the lengthy ball scene, which Shaw especially wrote for the film, Eliza passes muster with the duchess Irene Browne , who wants to know all about this lovely creature. But Pickering and Higgins know their biggest worry is the pompous Count Karpathy Esme Percy , who is notorious for debunking pretenders to high society. Higgins is standing by to hear the pronouncement. Neither man thanks Eliza for her part in the success. And, so, when she does return, Henry, seeing no need to change his ways or become, heaven forbid! The recipient of the only win was George Bernard Shaw himself, a character in his own right, not unlike Professor Higgins.
Eliza is irrevocably isolated from her roots, scared. The bet is over, and —object that she is to Higgins — she can now be cruelly and heartlessly discarded back into the gutter.
Now the gloves are off, and the slippers are thrown. The rat-a-tat interchanges here, as Eliza and Higgins hash it out, is verbal foreplay at the highest level. I just cannot explain how gloriously pleasurable it is to watch these igniting exchanges. Shaw eschewed any romantic ending for Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. But the movie adaptation is, mercifully, a wee bit more ambiguous for us romantics at heart, who dare to believe that even the staid and sardonic old bachelor can change, can drop his airs of practiced indifference, be vulnerable, express earnestness and kindness on occasion, instead of always hiding behind a shield of irony and wryness. Can our beauty transform this beast? It is a nuanced and impressive performance. And Wendy Hiller is equally nuanced and impressive in her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. They both do.
It is truly a tour de force and an absolute pleasure to behold. Pygmalion is breathlessly and brutally brilliant. It raises all sorts of questions about nature versus nurture, about class and morality, about misogyny and what it is to be a woman, about notions of the self, and about the nature and aspects of love. Seriously, I do not know how it is that I went 42 years on this planet without ever having seen this film. And I have now become something of a major fangirl of Leslie Howard. Be still, my 42-year-old heart, but that man is fine. See it.
Sometimes, the actors were delivering their lines so fast that I had a hard time understanding what they were saying. For example, I think that the film needed to spend more time developing the relationship between Eliza and Higgins. The film never once portrayed him as being anything but abrupt, short-tempered, and often downright cruel to her. He treated her as a living doll that he could, at any time, tire of and discard. Had he shown her any modicum of kindness, then I could understand why she might return to him. The film just made her forced training seem far too easy for her. She was even described as a quick student that could learn anything.

It was co-directed by Anthony Asquith and one of its stars, Leslie Howard. Its sole award was for Best Screenplay. To do so, Higgins must transform her thick-accented voice, by coaching her to speak proper English with elocution lessons, teaching her manners, and drilling her so that she will be educated.
