Knights of the Inner Sea:
Game Mechanics: Additional spells, with a nature focus, work to control movement and interact with plants and animals. They can call upon nature to root enemies in place, or to turn fey and fiends. At later levels, they gain a powerful aura to reduce all spell damage by half, and eventually gain the ability to come back from 0 hp. Play-style: You like the idea of playing to an oath that is above society and people. You like the nature loving side of druids, but want to use weapons and armor with a only a dash of magical spells. Advertisements Batman — DC Comics Oath of Vengeance PHB Theme: Perseverant and persistent, the paladin of vengeance will tear down any obstacle to find justice, punishing those that have wronged them or others.
Game Mechanics: Central abilities focus on frightening and reducing enemies ability to move, or enhance your ability to catch up to opponents. At higher levels, this paladin can move with opportunity attacks and, at their highest level, are able to fly. Play-style: You want to play the unstoppable force that is determined to get their objective. Whether it be by enhancing your abilities or preventing the opponent, your focus is always on closing the gap between you and the goal. Judge Dredd — Dredd Oath of the Crown SCAG Theme: Sworn to maintaining law and sense of order, the crown paladin is determined to find the most diplomatic way for everyone to get along and, if they cannot, to quell those that foster sedition. In the most dire circumstances, this paladin will sacrifice themselves for the good of others.
Game Mechanics: Possibly the most tank-like Paladin, this class has the ability to prevent enemies from moving away from them, healing their allies, and taking damage that would otherwise hurt their friends. At later levels, they have an advantage to being paralyze or stunned, and gain a significant amount of saving throw advantages at their highest level. Play-style: You like to play someone who can lead: someone who will seek the truth and room for peace between people. In combat, you like to think of the strengths and weaknesses of your entire team as a whole rather than the individual. Conquering others is easy if they already defeat themselves with despair.
Radiant Strikes now work on both melee weapons and Unarmed Strikes. Restoring Touch has been moved to a 14th-level class feature. Divine Conduit has been removed from the class features, with Aura Expansion returning at 18th-level.
These changes are as follows Oath of Devotion: With the changes to Smites, some spells and revisions have happened to the Oath of Devotions spell list, and it is now as follows: 3rd — Protection from Evil and Good, Shield of Faith 5th — Aid, Zone of Truth 9th — Beacon of Hope, Dispel Magic 13th — Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Faith 17th — Commune, Flame Strike Smite of Protection has also been moved to 15th-level and works with all Smite spells, and provides Half Cover to every player in range of your Aura of Protection until the start of your next turn. The Peerless Athlete Feature now lasts one hour instead of ten minutes. Lastly, Aura of Alacrity will now enhance Aura of Protection and provide a greater range for the feature than in previous versions. Aura of Warding will now enhance the Aura of Protection, providing resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage. Finally, the Elder Champion is now a Bonus Action, and its benefits apply to all your spells, and you can restore a use of this feature by expending a 5th-level spell slot.
Benefit: A lightbringer paladin can use this ability at will. This is a divination effect similar to a detect evil spell, except that it finds undead only of any alignment. At the moment the paladin uses the ability, she knows if there are any undead within a chosen 60-degree arc, knows the exact number , and knows their exact location. This ability is the equivalent of a 2nd-level spell. It is a spell-like ability. Divine Counterspell Although the ability to turn undead is arguably a defining cleric characteristic, some clerics and paladins find that they can be even more effective crusaders by opposing evil spellcasters. The ability to negate an enemy spellcasters magic grants a character an unexpected edge. Class: Cleric or paladin. Level: 1st cleric or 4th paladin. Special Requirement: Knowledge arcana 1 rank. Replaces: You do not gain the ability to turn or rebuke undead. This ability functions just as if you were using dispel magic to counter the spell, except that you add your cleric level instead of your caster level to the d20 roll. For example, a paladin would normally turn undead as a cleric of three levels lower; her effective cleric level for counterspelling is equal to her paladin level - 3. Divine Spirit Most paladins form a special relationship with a celestial mount that aids them in battle. You, however, spend most of your time fighting below the ground or in enclosed spaces, where a mount is of little use.

DnD 5E You are to become a knight. Your powerful lord stands before you, reciting an oath that you repeat, committing yourself to the tenets. From now on, you are not a fighter with a slew of weapons and armour; you are not a scholar of magical spells; you are the righteous paladin of this oath who will carve a legend into the history books with tales of your devotion.
The only question is: what are you devoted to? Here are some quick summaries of each subclass, which will give a bit of insight to the theme, generalized game mechanics, and the likely play style to expect. Your interpretation may differ, and if it does, please share how!
Whether it be a law, justice, or an authoritative figure, this is the knight who values their word and loyalty above anything else. Game Mechanics: Additional spells include utility and protection spells, like protection from evil and good, or sanctuary. They are able to magically enhance their weapon to do additional damage and create light.
The devotion paladin can also turn undead or fiends, making them run away in fear. At later levels, they have an aura to protect themselves and allies against being charmed. Play-style: You want to play the honorable knight, healing the injured, protecting the weak, and showing how great your honour is.
You like to reserve your spells for role-play, and focus on your weapons for combat. The ancient oath works with all kinds of nature to vanquish those who would seed evil into otherwise peaceful grounds.
A magic weapon. This is likely out of your control, but for this build, a magic spear or quarterstaff would be ideal. If you find a magic halberd or glaive, you can work with those too. Some monsters have resistance or immunity to non-magical weapon attacks, and being able to bypass that resistance with your attacks is important.
Level 1 Strategy In combat, we want to be attacking twice with our glaive while wearing our chain mail. Whenever an enemy enters our reach which will be 10 feet at this point , take the free opportunity attack. Save Lay on Hands for between combat healing unless an ally has gone down, in which case you should give them one point of healing. Level 2 Paladin Fighting Style — Dueling. Note: Your reach is now 5 feet. Note that Divine Smite specifically says you deal the damage when you hit a creature, so it will never be wasted on a miss, and if you score a critical hit, you can choose to use a Divine Smite on that hit and double the damage. Spellcasting — Spellcasting is a hugely important piece of the Paladin class, and adds to your versatility and effectiveness beyond the simple damage increase from Divine Smite.
Spells Prepared 1st Level: bless, command, shield of faith, wrathful smite. Command — A good control spell that can force an enemy to spend its turn doing something advantageous to you. For example: Command a creature in melee with you to flee to cause it to provoke opportunity attacks from you and any allies in melee with it. This was confirmed to not violate the restrictions for Command in Sage Advice.
You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin. One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate. This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them. Red in this context is the anger which is bread our character and their chosen oath. There is an rage which is inherent in vengeance whether it is justified or not, and this can mare our paladins view of the world. When we create our characters we want them to be complex and faults such as these can bread complexity and lead to moments that some Paladin role-players might be afraid to tread and yet by using the colors present their hand is forced. As you can already see the Paladin can be dynamic in its motivations when we take a look at what could lead to such oaths and how those could be played out in your campaigns. To do this I want to remove Red and add in Green. Its a desire to kindle the light present in the living, to bring hope into a dark world, and to protect that life at all costs. They see signs in the faces in the flowers, the voice of god in the songs of birds and visions of a better world in the clouds. This character, one day overwhelmed by what they saw, had an epiphany, it was them who was destined to stand as a shepherd for life. It was their calling to be the one who would take a strong position against the cosmic chaos which aims to break this perfection, and it was on this day they took the oath of the ancients and set their lot in with this order of Paladins. Taking their sword which once was no more than a lump of sharpened steel and presented it up high with purpose. If we look to the intersection between Green and White we will find ideals such as the upholding of life and tradition to be shared. White will do what it can to stand against darkness and to defend that which cannot defend itself, while Green wishes to see things grow and appreciates the beauty found in all things. This ancient oath is one which has been upheld by paladins for as far back as the first elves. The Fey or Green Knight has always stood for the land and its people and because of this tradition is a strong feature in this version of the paladin. Once again going back to our colors we we know that tradition and the upholding of the old way are common among both of these colors. Feel free to allow your character to be positive, happy and to bring out the best in others over themselves. For our final rendition I want to do something drastic and shed both of these colors and bring in Black, because yes White is important to the paladin and its oath but what happens when that oath is broken? BLACK One can devote their life to something bigger than them only to become jaded by what it stands for.
D&D Paladin Level Up – a step by step guide (5e)
Darkness has crept into their mind, contorting their faith and estranging them from the divination they once espoused. This twist on the classic Paladin formula translates into a suite of aberrant abilities that center on high damage, and the undead. The best Channel Divinity option is Dreadful Aspect, frightening all creatures within a 30-foot radius. The alternative, Control Undead, lets you bring any undead creature under your mental control. If nothing else, these starter-necromancy spells are fun to play around with. At level 15, Supernatural Resistance grants permanent protection from bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage dealt by non-magical weapons, seriously boosting your defenses. Later on, higher-level spells like Blight and Contagion can really help you pile on damage.
Paladin 5e spells Although most at home in the thick of battle, swinging a greatsword and relying on thick plate armor to glance incoming blows, Paladins have a powerful spell list open to them. The rapid growth of spell slots that Paladins gain as they level makes them formidable defensive spellcasters, that can challenge the utility of any half-baked Cleric. When picking spells, bear two things in mind: Concentration and Charisma. Your Cha modifier dictates how many spells you may prepare after each long rest and, in several cases, their effectiveness. As for picking spells, Paladins have it easy. Use this freedom to experiment with the many options available, and test out creative combinations.
Find Steed Level: Two Summon a loyal animal to fight by your side, whether a horse, mastiff, camel, or anything else you can wrangle out of your DM. Anything you summon will stick around until it drops to zero HP. Revivify Level: Three A classic.
Up to this time you have been in a preparatory stage, committed to the path but not yet sworn to it. Now you choose an oath, such as the Oath of Devotion.
Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature. Oath Spells Each oath has a list of associated spells. You gain access to these spells at the levels specified in the oath description. Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared.
Channel Divinity Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects. Each Channel Divinity option provided by your oath explains how to use it. When you use your Channel Divinity, you choose which option to use. You must then finish a short or long rest to use your Channel Divinity again. Some Channel Divinity effects require saving throws.
When you use such an effect from this class, the DC equals your paladin spell save DC. Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. You must be conscious to grant this bonus. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
Improved Divine Smite By 11th level, you are so suffused with righteous might that all your melee weapon strikes carry divine power with them. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d8 radiant damage.
Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception. The Cha boost helps a bit too. Aside from that, swim speed, breathe water and air, talk to water creatures, and cold resistance. Good all around. Also gets Darkvision, free Stealth proficiency and 2d6 extra damage when attacking from surprise. The Int may be less useful for you though. The Saving-Face ability is great in a big party. The bonus action movement helps with getting into melee range which can sometimes be an issue, darkvision and intimidation are solid pickups. Magic resistance and poison immunity plus darkvision. A well rounded choice for any Paladin. DEX Paladins could see some real benefits here. Not bad. Heavily armored Paladins can use the Strength bonus. Disguising yourself is a nice trick in more social campaigns. Change your Armour composition during a long rest, resistance to poison and immunity to disease. Navigational skills never hurt anyone either. Also think of the fun creature your Find Steed will create and get more Horns in your arsenal. At lower levels though, the difference is much more noticeable. It is less forgiving, and getting dropped is really, really easy. Keep that in mind when looking at races. To the tainted we bring fire. Your main enemy apart from undead will be fiends and eventually any non natural plane creatures. Sacred Weapon: Lv. An action to add your CHA-modifier to attack rolls for a minute 10 rounds. Does not require Concentration to maintain thus stacks with any other buffs and does not count as a spell which means you can cast a swift spell in the same round. A very good ability for that climactic fight during that part of the day. Turn the Unholy: Lv. Oath Spells overall rating : Lv. All of these are quality spells that are mostly already on the Paladin list. They skew towards buffs or healing spells, though there are a few damaging spells thrown in for good measure. Sanctuary for example is great at protecting a healer. Aura of Devotion: Lv. Getting immunity to charm for yourself and allies within the Aura is very powerful. Essentially immunity to spells like Suggestion, Dominate and Geas, as well as to equally nasty monster Charm abilities like those from vampires and succubi. Purity of Spirit: Lv. Aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead will always have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. The benefits of this will definitely be felt against hordes of weaker enemies of these types. Holy Nimbus: Lv. Great against hordes of enemies, morse specifically hordes of undead or fiends who are vulnerable to radiant damage. Does not count as a spell, and does not require a saving throw, it just does damage. The advantage on saving throws is a nice addition. Consider the nature-themed Oath that gives you bonuses against Fey creatures. The Oath of the Ancients sees you protected from Magic damage from spells along with some great defensive utility options. If your campaign sees you fighting mages or wandering through the Feywild then this could be a strong choice. Not off to a strong start, using your action to restrainin is nice but the range is short. Turn the Faithless: Lv. Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools. Aura of Warding: Lv. Cuts all damage from spells against you and allies in your aura in half! Undying Sentinel: Lv. Elder Champion: Lv. Become the avatar of the forest and regain some health every turn. Takes the action to cast Elder champion, but with forewarning you may be able to trigger it before battle.

This build requires a minimum Paladin level of 2, and the first level should be taken in Paladin. This character is primarily considered a melee character to utilize the strength-based abilities of the Paladin including smite and heavy armor. Charisma is a highly favored ability score, since both Paladin and Warlock spells and abilities use this score. Constitution, as usual, is extremely important for survival. At level 3 and further, levels should be put in Warlock, taking melee option abilities as you level. Warlocks regain all spell slots during a short rest.
Strength, a flexible ability score increase, natural armor, AC bonus, and the vigilance to keep watch over a sleeping party. Totally flexible, and lots of great options. Class Features Hit Dice: d10 hit points put you at the top of the hit point game. Weapon Proficiencies: All weapons. The best kind. Armor Proficiencies: All armor and shields. Tool Proficiencies: None. Lay On Hands: This is the most efficient healing ability in the game. Fighting Style: Paladins get a smaller list of fighting styles than Fighters do, but there are still solid options on the list. The reroll does not apply to Smite damage dice, making it less useful.
If you plan on using two-handed weapons, pick Defense instead to compensate for your lack of a shield. Protection: Tempting, but it only works with adjacent allies. Spellcasting: Paladin spellcasting is a nice mix of defensive buffs and healing. Your Smite spells are unique to your class, and powerful options for your swordsmanship. Burning spell slots on your Divine Smite is also a great use of spells. Using the Smite spells, such as Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, and Wrathful Smite can do decent damage with helpful additional effects which may be more situationally useful than the small amount of extra damage that Divine Smite provides. Extra Attack: A second attack doubles your damage output. Cleansing Touch: A great way to un-curse your allies without using a spell slot. The abilities granted are a mix of crowd control options and strong offensive options. Oath Spells: Most of the spells on this list require a save by the target, so upping your Charisma is mandatory if you plan on using them to their best effect.
Hold Person will be unreliable unless you have a really strong Charisma. This might be the level reserved for smites. Dominate beast suffers from the same DC dependence as the previous. Channel Divinity: Both options are excellent. Guided Strike: This is a really great ability that ensures you hit with an attack, which means you get to smite. Aura of Conquest: You have two ways to cause fear, your channel divinity and the fear spell, both of which require a save DC. If you needed a reason to increase your Charisma, this is it. The ability to lock down terrified enemies can end an encounter or prevent a squad of minions from moving. Scornful Rebuke: Cast Compel Duel on an enemy, and then watch them kill themselves. More hits coming in means more damage going out.
Invincible Conqueror: For 1 minute per day you become an absolute wrecking ball. Oath of Devotion This is the most typical version of a Paladin. It provides a mix of abilities that are intuitive and have a good degree of synergy. Protection from Evil and Good is a very strong buff, especially when used to prevent or control possession and charm effects at low levels, when your party is particularly susceptible to them. Guardian of Faith is a very strong area control spell. Commune is tricky to use well. Channel Divinity: Two useful options that feel very…paladin-y. Sacred Weapon: Granting yourself a magic weapon for a minute is very useful at low levels, but chances are any magic weapons you find over time will outclass this eventually. Turn the Unholy: Adding turning undead and fiends to your list of abilities is useful for dealing with crowds of monsters. Purity of Spirit: Protection from Evil and Good is an amazing defensive buff, and having it permanently running without needing to concentrate is spectacular.
This also keeps pesky minions off your back, allowing you to save your weapon attacks for the main villain. Unlike the other Sacred Oaths, this one grants abilities that can most easily be used to prevent or end encounters and promote diplomatic avenues. This sacred oath requires you to max out your Charisma as soon as possible, in order to make the best use of your Charisma-based skills and spellcasting, all of which relies on your targets failing the spell save DC. Oath Spells: Your spells are all excellent and on theme. Calm emotions is a strong area of effect spell, but only works situationally. They give you great resilience. Wall of force is the best wall spell in the game. Channel Divinity: Both options are easy to use and commonly activated. Rebuke the Violent: Great to use against enemy casters, or big monsters who hit hard. Did they just hurt you?
Make them feel your pain. Aura of the Guardian: Being able to soak up damage lets you tank at short range. In case one of your squishier party members accidentally gets hurt, you can soak it for them. Protective Spirit: This makes Aura of the Guardian safer to use and helps keep you alive. Emissary of Redemption: By being a punching bag, you can take no actions and kill something. Oath of the Ancients Ah, the Nature Paladin. Oath of the Ancients shares a lot of abilities with both Rangers and Druids. It includes abilities that restrain and hinder movement of enemies, which gives you a great degree of battlefield control. Misty Step is a great spell that solves a lot of mobility problems including pits, difficult terrain, walls, and enemies. Protection From Energy is a mandatory spell for any adventurer going after dragons, elementals, or any higher level caster.
Stone Skin is a good buff, but it has an expensive material component. Given that you learn it at 13th-level, many enemies you encounter will have magic attacks. Channel Divinity: Two options that give you decent battlefield control. Aura of Warding: Resistance to spell damage turns you into a safe haven from enemy spellcasters. You are provided with several abilities to single out foes and taunt them into attacking you over your weaker, more vulnerable allies. Additionally, you are afforded ways to take damage that would otherwise be dealt to your friends and use your large pool of hit points and healing options to soak up damage instead. This gives your healer a more efficient turn, where they only have to heal you with a single spell, rather than taking multiple turns to spread it around. Oath Spells: Crown spells are a mix of useful and useless spells. Some of these spells are going to be used constantly, others are going to be converted into smites.
This build requires a minimum Paladin level of 2, and the first level should be taken in Paladin. Charisma is a highly favored ability score, since both Paladin and Warlock spells and abilities use this score. Constitution, as usual, is extremely important for survival. In our Paladin DnD 5E guide, we suggest that unless there is a particular spell or CD that is important for your build or really interests you, I would recommend choosing an Oath which resonates most with your character. There is an additional Oath option, the Oathbreaker, which will not be covered here as it is a DM-facing subclass, primarily intended for NPCs. Channel Divinity options will be denoted by [CD]. Devotion The more stereotypical of the Paladin Oaths , Devotion is driven by justice, virtue, and order, in true knight in shining armor fashion. Their abilities and spells are geared towards fighting the stereotypical enemy of Paladins: fiends, undead, and aberrations but they are also effective against other foes. In practice, losing your first action of a fight is a very steep cost. This gets a 3 for helping you overcome resistance or immunity to non-magical BPS, and the potential it has in longer combats. Aura of Devotion 4 — Situational, but the amount of charmed-based effects on monsters is surprisingly large. This is worthy of a 4 as it completely shuts down the dangerous aspect of some creatures, and saves the party from the Barbarian being controlled by a spell like Dominate Monster… again. Purity of Spirit 4 — A very powerful passive benefit, Protection from Evil and Good covers a large number of creature types, making this relevant in a lot of situations. Holy Nimbus 3 — This capstone is okay, but nothing special, primarily because of the action cost with so little in return. Additionally, saves against spells cast by fiends and undead are very niche, not protecting you from their non-spell abilities is disappointing. This would have been a 4 if it only cost a bonus action to activate. Ancients Paladin meets Druid, this Oath is focused more on the principle of good overall, rather than law or chaos, and does so with a nature theme. The features and spells continue a theme of nature magic, combined with protection against fey and fiends, and enhancing the survivability of the Paladin. This subclass is often talked about because of its aura that gives resistance to spell damage. Aura of Warding 3 — A fantastic aura… if it applies to you, that is. Great for certain adventures, but too powerful to rate only a 2. The added ribbon of not feeling your age, or being vulnerable to magical aging is nice flavor added on. Elder Champion 5 — An excellent capstone ability worth the action cost. Excellent to pair with Ensnaring Strike, the disadvantage on the saving throw can be easily converted into advantage on your attacks, and additional damage. Vengeance If vengeance stories motivate you, the idea of chasing down the monsters who wronged the innocent stirs your righteous heart then this is the subclass for you. The mechanics support an aggressive playstyle with access to teleportation spells which give you the capability to pursue or your quarry or form a tactical retreat when necessary. Abjure Enemy [CD] 2 — Frightened with a speed of zero is a very nice debuff, and the increased potency against fiends and undead makes this a more effective feature even for lower Charisma Paladins. Though, the effect disappearing when the creature takes damage completely undermines all of those benefits, especially when it took your entire action to set up. This can still be helpful but is not a go-to use of your Channel Divinity by any means. Vow of Enmity [CD] 5 — A fantastic buff against bosses and other meaty single targets. Not only can this help land more smites, but can also aid if you went the route of using Great Weapon Master. Relentless Avenger 2 — A feature that can be useful for chasing down your quarry, but an enemy running away from you whilst provoking an opportunity attack is a bit too niche of a trigger. Soul of Vengeance 4 — A significant improvement to your Vow of Enmity that will increase your damage output drastically, remember the reaction attack will have advantage. Avenging Angel 3 — This is okay overall, the mobility of having a 60ft fly speed is a significant increase to the Paladin, and the fear aura has potential. Crown Driven by their ideals of civilization, Crown Paladins are guided by the law, their loyalty to whichever form of civilization they have chosen, such as a nation or sovereign, and the belief of being responsible for your actions. Their mechanics are that of a tank Paladin, gaining access to spells and features to protect others or make themselves the center of hostile attention instead. This subclass is often forgotten about, as it was published in the SCAG but not later republished like other subclasses from the same book. Champion Challenge [CD] 5 — A great tanking ability and one of the few abilities in the game that forces enemies to pay attention to you, rather than the squishy spellcasters 35 feet behind you. Turn the Tide [CD] 3 — This ability has a lot of potential and is potentially a lot of hit points. The stand-out spell here is Spirit Guardians, which would synergize well with Champion Challenge, this is the only Paladin to gain access to this great spell. I would have preferred to see a little more healing on the list, this is the perfect Paladin for Healing Word. Divine Allegiance 2 — If you build your Paladin with soaking up large amounts of damage in mind, this can be very useful to keep your party members alive. However, the inability to reduce the damage, and the 5ft limit of the feature means you would likely be better off using the Interception style for the most part. Unyielding Spirit 2 — Advantage against paralysis and being stunned is nice, but very niche to be the only feature at this late a level. The advantage on Wisdom saving throws is also a large defensive boost at this level, where Wisdom saves are pretty common and the effects of failing them particularly unpleasant. The stand-out here is that this ability lasts for an entire hour, rather than the much shorter duration of other Oath capstones, allowing you to fit potentially several encounters into a single use. Conquest A very different take on the Paladin archetype, being devoted to crushing all who stand before you and amassing personal power, the mechanics and spells are based around inducing and extorting fear in your enemies. Between the focus on causing the frightened condition and their aura, Conquest Paladins have a reputation of being great battlefield control Paladins. Conquering Presence [CD] 5 — A great debuff with no chance of friendly fire and no risk of removing the effect by damaging the creatures affected. Guided Strike [CD] 3 — Being able to make a big miss a hit is very nice, however, a single hit on a class with Extra Attack is a very expensive use of your Channel Divinity. Nice to have in your back pocket to pull off a smite when you need to, but it makes far more sense on the War Cleric, which makes fewer attacks and gets more uses of their CD. Oath Spells 5 — The overall theme of the list is very appropriate for the subclass, with a useful selection. Aura of Conquest 5 — This aura ties to your CD and spell options, giving the subclass a very cohesive feel, the effect of the aura itself is also very powerful. Being able to lock down a frightened creature, and automatically doing damage to them, is a quick path to victory. This feature benefits from gaining as many ways to impose the frightened condition as possible and having a higher save DC against that condition. Scornful Rebuke 5 — Automatic damage, of a good type, whenever someone hits you? What pushes this ability into a 5 is this working at range and both with weapons and spells.
